Laura Masone, Senior Associate in Physical Education, joined the faculty of Barnard in 1992. She is the Group Fitness Director for Barnard's FITbear Program and has been the Director of Columbia's Group Fitness Program since 1985. She teaches all Group Fitness classes as well as Weight Room, Instructor Training, and Self-Paced Courses and is the Faculty Advisor for Independent Studies in Physical Education.
She has teaching certifications from the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Council on Exercise, American Aerobic Association International, Aquatics Exercise Association, and Zumba.com. She is certified with the American Red Cross as a Professional Rescuer and as an instructor in Community CPR and First Aid.
She is a world expert in training fitness instructors and personal trainers. She developed the instructor training program and manual for Fitness Masters, the NYC Ballet Workout and the NYC Parks Foundation. She trains all of the group fitness instructors on the Barnard/Columbia campus.
